Fairway Fridays: How to add backspin to your approach shot

Being able to put backspin on your approach shots is crucial to sticking the ball close to the pin and scoring low. It’s easy to start with the basics – having the right wedges helps (we recommend the Vokey SM8) – but there are definitely some technical steps to help you master the shot. PGA Pro Chris Ryan has a great video tutorial, but to break it down very quickly:

  1. Play the ball in the middle of your stance (avoid putting it too far back)
  2. Take a shallow divot – imagine swinging through the ball with a level stroke as opposed to down on the ball.
  3. Extend your follow through towards the target.

Watching the video and give it a try…and as Chris says, don’t forget to clean your clubs and keep those grooves clean!
